Gary Bissell has progressed from a Bricklayer to Site Manager with Jones Building Group whilst gaining his NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management.

Gary, pictured top right, joined Jones Building Group in 2019 as a bricklayer for our Property Services Department and has over 20 years’ experience in the Construction industry.

Gary has worked predominantly on our NHBC remedial works contract and throughout his time at Jones Building Group, has progressed onto Site Manager and completed a number of projects in this role. This includes a bungalow refurbishment in Minehead, refurbishment of Portesham Primary School, construction of a temporary police station at SSDC offices, and refurbishment works at Johnson Park in Yeovil. Gary is currently undertaking works at Lyngford Park Surgery where we are carrying out refurbishment works and constructing 2 new extensions.

Gary recalled “When I joined Jones Building Group, I had a very clear career plan and, with the support of my management team, step by step I have managed to achieve my goal in a relatively short time frame. This has been due to the hard work that I have put in and a very good support network around me. I have shown commitment and dedication and feel that I have been rewarded for the effort that I have put in to my career.”

Gary has undertaken a number of qualifications during his time with the company including an NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management in 2021. This subsequently led to Gary gaining his Black CSCS Manager and Professional Card. Gary has also gained his First Aid at Work, SMSTS, Asbestos Awareness, Covid-19 Setting up and Operating a Safe Construction Site, Temporary Works Supervisor, and Scaffold Inspection qualifications through his time with Jones Building Group.

Gary said “It is very rewarding to be a CSCS black card holder as, coupled with the NVQ 6, this demonstrates that not only do I have the skills, knowledge and experience required to manage building sites but I also have the ability to do that in a safe and compliant manner. Overall, I am very pleased with myself and am looking forward to getting some bigger contracts under my belt before I push on with the next chapter in my development. I am very grateful to Jones Building Group for giving me the opportunity to make this step in my career.”

Mark Porter, added: “I am pleased to have seen Gary’s progress within Jones as he was originally introduced to us by a client who had used him on smaller work schemes. At that time, Gary was keen to progress and advance his skills within a larger organisation and he has taken ownership for his development. Gary’s brickwork knowledge and skills have allowed him to take the very big and bold step up to this site manager position. He is a committed and reliable member of the team and also helps out on the company out of hours call out list. It was a pleasure to be able to walk his site today and see the strides he is making in the new role. He is conscientious and caring and whilst the project has its challenges, I can see that Gary is overcoming obstacles and learning from the experience.  “
